Ranger’s Apprentice by John Flanagan
The Rangers, dark cloaks and shadowy personalitys, have always made him nervoys. The villlagers think Rangers practice magic that makes them invisible to ordinary people. And now, fifteen year old Will, always small for his age, is picked as a Ranger’s Apprentice. What he doesn’t yet realize is that the Rangers are the protectors of the kingdom, highly trained in the skills of battle and surveillance, they fight the battles before the battles reach the people. And as Will is about to learn, a large battle is brewing, the exiled Morgarath, Lord of the Mountains of Rain and Night is gathering his forces for an attack on the kingdom. This time he will not be denied…
Very, very good. Look out for the next book, The Burning Bridge.

Alex Rider: Point Blank by Anthony Horowitz
When an investigationinto a series of mysterious deaths leads agemts tp am elite prep school, MI6 assigns Alex Rider, fourteen year old somewhat reluctant spy, yet again, on the case. Before he knows it, Alex is stuck in a remote boarding school high atop the Swiss Alps with the sons of the rich and powerful, and something feels wrong. Very wrong. These former juvinile delinquets have turned into well behaved, studious, and identical, overnight. It’s up to Alex to figure out who is the mastermind behind this plan, before they find him. The clock is ticking, is Alex’s luck about to run out?
look out for Skeleton Key, in your library.

Elissa’s Odyssey book 2 in the Phoenix Rising trilogy by Erica Verrillo
Elissa has escaped the evil clutches of the greedy Khan with the help of the Blue People, and her best friend Maya, and now longs to be reunited with her father. But when she becomes seperated from Maya and her faithful donkey, Gertrude, Elissa embarks on a perilous voyage to get back to them. During her adventures with the colorfyl crew of the rickety craft called the swamp maiden inclyding a fiery young count with a shadowy past, Elissa faces increasingly confounding questions” What is this mysterious weapon that has the power of lightning? Is an unseen hand leading her to others with Gifts of their own? Why is her Gift growing in power, and will she be able to master it before it masters her?

The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart
ARE YOU A GIFTED CHILD LOOKING FOR SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES? the add in the paper stated. Whe this unusual ad appears, dozens of children enroll to take a series of mysterious mindbending tests. But in the end, just four very special children will succeed. Reynie, ‘Sticky’, Kate, and Constance. Their challenge: go on a secret mission that only the most intelligent and resourceful children could complete. To accomplish it they will have to go undercover at the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened, where the only rule, is that there are no rules.

Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen
“Ruby, where is your mother?” with that question from the social worker, Ruby knows the game is up. She’s been libing alone in the yellow house, waiting out the months until she turns eighteen and can finally be on her own legally. It certainly wasn’t her plan to ve reunited with Cora the sister who left ten years earlier, and brought to live with Cora and her wealthy entrepreneu husband.
Suddenly life is transformed: a luxurious house, private school, new clothes, and even a chance of a future Ruby couldn’t even hae dreamed of. So why is she wary, unable to be grateful, incapeable of letting anyone close? Her old life has veen left behind, but where does she fit in this new life? Only Nate, the genial, popular boy next door, seems to understand, perhaps because he’s hiding a few secrets of his own.

We’ve recieved several great reviews from the Metamorphosis SRP crew. Click MORE to read them all

I’m reviewing The Wanderer by Sharon Creech. The book is about Sophie (an orphan who has forgotten her past), Brian and Cody (Sophie’s Cousins. Brian loves charts and Cody is very athletic.), and Uncle Mo, Uncle Stew, and Uncle Dock. It tells through Sophie and Cody’s journal entries the story of their sail to england on an old boat, The Wanderer. I enjoyed this book because the characters are realistic and humorous. I recommend this book to anyone. While telling the tale of a dangerous sailing adventure, it also tells the story of two kids trying to find their place in the world.

- Darci D. (click her name to visit her own SRP blog)

The following reviews were all written by Megan E.:

Author: Stephanie Meyers

Title: New Moon

Main Characters- Bella Swan, Jacob Black, Edward Cullen, Alice Cullen

Plot- For Bella Swan there is one thing more important than life itself: Edward Cullen. But being in love with a vampire is even more dangerous than Bella could ever have imagined. Edward has already saved her from the clutches of and evil vampire, James, but now, their relationship threatens all that is near and dear to them, they realize that their troubles might just be begining. So, Edward leaves in hopes that Bella will be safe if he isn’t near her. But he’s wrong. Soon Bella realizes that her best friend is one of the many Werewolves on the La Push reservation, and Bella is in more danger than ever.

Setting: Forks, Washington

What I liked best: I’m not sure. It’s one of those… forbidden love things, and though I never have liked romance, I just love the Twilight books, and can’t wait for Breaking Dawn.

other- Stephanie Meyer’s book Twilight is being turned into a movie coming out on December 12

—————————-

Author: J. K. Rowling

Title: Harry Potter six- the halfblood prince

Main characters: Harry Potter, The Weasleys, Hermione Granger, Professor Dumbledore

Plot: It’s Harry’s sixth year at Hogwarts, and Harry hopes it’ll be a quiet one, seeing as what all he’s went through in his past. But he’s wrong. When Harry arives at Hogwarts, and is told that he can take Potions now that they have a new Potions Master, Harry’s hopes of one day becoming an Auror brighten. When given a Potions book that once belonged to Half-blood Prince, Harry is surprised to find the book is been corected. Potions are muddled with, and ingrediants are tampered with… but surprisingly it all works! Suddenly Harry is the best in Potions. But Hermione Granger feels that there is something wrong with the book. Harry’s scheduel is suddenly fuller than ever with Quidditch practice, slug club, and lessons with Dumbledore. But something isn’t right with the school, and Harry’s out to figure out what it is. This book is easily one of the most exciting.

Setting: Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry

other- one of the many Harry Potter books

date blogged- sent on the 22

—————————-

Author: Anthony Horowitz

Title: Alex Rider- Snakehead

Main Character: Alex Rider

Plot: They murdered his parents. They shot him and left him for dead. And yet, somehow Alex Rider thought he was finished with the horrid terrorist organization known as Scorpia when he ruined their plans to kill thousands of innocent children. He was wrong. Scorpia is back and more dangerously mad than ever, working with the ruthless gangs operating across the Southeastern part of Asia. Known as Snakeheads the gangs smuggle drugs, weapons, and worst of all people. Alex wants nothing to do with them, but when the Australian Secret Service asks him to infiltrate one of the gangs, Alex accepts for only one reason: to work with the godfather he never knew he had, in hopes of learning more about his parents. What he uncovers though, is a secret that will make his darkest and most dangerous mission to date.

Setting: from the slums of Bangkok to the Australian Outback to the middle of Timor Sea.

What I liked best: It is action packed and full of daredevil stunts that i never even thought imaginable! And It’s all done by a boy two years older than me!

Other: there are Alex Rider novels, such as

1. Stormbreaker 2. Point Blank 3. Skeleton Key 4. Eagle Strike 5. Scorpia 6. Ark Angel

Date blogged: Sent on the 22

—————————-

Author: D. Anne Love

Title: Semiprecious

But soon turns into days, weeks, and then months, and before they know it, they’re starting school in Oklahoma. While Opal quickly becomes one of the most popular girls in school, Garnet struggles with the change. For Garnet getting used to her new life means trying to learn how to have pride in herself when it seems she has little to offer the world and the odds are against her. With only each other to lean on, Melanie Hubbard’s ‘Precious gems’ must learn to live with the hand they’ve been dealt, and to accept the changing faces in their family.

What I like Best about it: I’m not really sure, it’s just an overall great story, and has a great plot that many girls can easily relate to.

Other: D. Anne Love has written several other novels, such as The Puppeteer’s apprentice, and The Secret Prince.

Date blogged: I sent this on the 22

The first two weeks of Summer Reading Program are now behind us. So far, we’ve had lots of fun and discussed several interesting things.

The first week we spoke about the ever-metamorphing world of technology. I showed off a few disassembled computers, spoke of how quickly new technology developes, and went over a wealth of other things. We also talked of new books and music geared toward teenagers the library has recently added to the collection. Lastly, I created a blog for each child to post reviews of books they read throughout the program. There name will be placed in a cup each time they review a book … we’ll draw a name from it during our finale. Whomever’s name we draw will win an 80 GB iPod Classic!

Our second week’s theme was “Hackers, Viruses, and Spyware … Oh My!”. We discussed the history of computer viruses, spyware and hackers. Many might be suprised to learn how several former outlows turned legit and became computer security professionals. For instance, two men from California, both named Steve, built a business selling boxes that allowed anyone to hack the phone system and make free long distance calls. These two Steve’s dropped the illegal activity and went on to create Apple Computers!

The following Wednesday we researched the topic of Butterfly Bushes. Then, after that, we got away from the computers and went outside to plant two of them. Sadly, the dry weather seems to have hindered their growth but they are still clinging to life!

If you’ve yet to register for the Metamorphosis portion of our Summer Reading Program you may do so by calling either Harbin Memorial Library (338-4760) or the Central City Public Library (754-4630).
